Addiction Documentary Airs on HBO on March 15

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is presenting an HBO special titled “Addiction” on March 15, 2007 at 9 pm EST. The NIH’s two main arms, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), have collaborated with HBO to bring forward this documentary about addiction, a disease that is estimated to affect 1 out of 10 Americans over 12 years of age (approximately 23 million).

The documentary is being funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and will showcase the nature of addiction and promising treatments for the disease. According to the documentary, only about 10-percent of those with substance abuse issues are receiving the treatment that they need. The film consists of nine separate segments, focusing on such subjects as emergency room visits, adolescents and medications used in treatment of addiction.

  1. i watched this HBO doccumentary. i didn’t really agree with it. i was a former cocaine addict and attended therapy and ive been sober for 3 years. i dont agree with how they applied that this was an “incurable brain disease” and didn’t even agree with how they told us in the treatment center that its genetical. its the persons decision and will to do it. and it can be fixed. it does still get hard sometimes but whenever iget temptations talking to others like my self helps alot. theres many websites now formed that help like my space groups or addicted.com. if this really is a disease then watch me kick it in the butt cuz im sober for life!!!
