Pennsylvania has produced a new\nseries of addiction treatment guidelines, changing the way in which doctors\nwould prescribe opioid medication in emergency room situations. This new advice\nworks alongside a new state law which limits opioid prescription for people\ndischarged from the emergency room to a 7-day supply only, and now recommends\nother treatments prior to offering opioid treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This comes in the midst of the\nnational opioid crisis. Speaking about the change was Secretary of Health for\nthe Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Rachel Levine: “These guidelines are\nintended to improve patient outcomes, and to supplement, but not replace the\nindividual physician and provider’s clinical judgment,”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We have absolutely learned in\nthis crisis that it’s impossible for someone to get into treatment and then\nrecovery if they’re dead,”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A change\nin guideline <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Guidelines also state that there\nshould be a readiness\nto treat patients who are already addicted with medication that can reduce\npainful, sever withdrawal symptoms. It could also help to stop the use of\nillegal opioids. Presently not all emergency rooms will regularly prescribe\nmedications when people show up after a drug overdose. This may be about to\nchange. The Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania,\nJeanmarie Parrone, said: “Everyone agreed that this was the responsibility\nof every state emergency department,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAll hospital emergency rooms\nencounter at least some patients struggling with addiction, ranging from people\nlooking for help with their addiction to those needing treatment for ailments\nrelated to injection drug use. Many of them don’t go to the doctor otherwise,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“So it’s really our only touch\nwith these patients, and if we can’t be treatment ready then, then we really\ncan’t help people,”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a doctor to be able to sign off\non offering out such treatment, they will need to undergo a special training\nprogram to get their Federal Government waiver. This would allow them to offer\nhelpful and powerful treatments to those with addiction issues, including\nbuprenorphine. While this requirement has meant that there was a slow-down in\ngetting treatment started in many ways, many people within the Pennsylvania\nHealth System are getting time off to complete their eight-hour course, and\npaying their fees on their behalf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This has seen numbers of qualified\nexperts move from around half a dozen capable to prescribe buprenorphine to\naround 50. This means that there is a significant change in the way that people\nare dealing with their requirements and treatments. In an era where something\nhas to be done to try and stem the flow of damage being done, this is a very\nimportant step in the right direction. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
